Thermocouple Installations and Specialist Attachment Methods
One of East Midlands Instrument Companys' on site services is the supply, installation and attachment of thermocouples. Our customers for this service operate a wide range of Boiler, Heater and associated Plant within the Power Station & Petrochemical Industries. Power Station services are available to Coal Fired, CCGT and CHP facilities.

A particular application for thermocouples is monitoring skin point temperatures on boiler and heater tubes and headers. These types of installations require careful attention to detail to ensure that the thermocouple is accurately positioned and securely attached.

There are many standard thermocouple attachment procedures; however East Midlands Instrument Company has perfected a metal-sprayed attachment technique, which helps keep downtime to a minimum yet provides a proven effectiveness for temperature response and accuracy of readings. To attach the thermocouples by this method we utilise a metal spray gun fuelled by Propane and Oxygen. The metal spray gun has an on-board variable speed compressed air motor which drives the metal spray wire through the centre of the burner nozzle, for atomisation, thus enabling the whole thermocouple attachment process to be accurately controlled.

Before attachment of the thermocouple, the parent surface and the sensor itself are specially prepared, to enable the metal spray bond to be optimised.

The sensor is then metal sprayed directly onto the parent surface. Our operatives have been trained by the metal spray equipment manufacturer and are experienced in the application of the metal sprayed coating. The operatives attain an accurate and repeatable bond which maximises the strength of each attachment whilst adding the minimum amount of extra mass to the attachment area.

Once fixed in position the thermocouple attachments have proved to be reliable over a number of years in even the most arduous of operating conditions. It should be noted that our metal sprayed attachment technique is a relatively low temperature process, (due to the high quench rate of the metal sprayed particles on contact with the parent surface) therefore, in these applications, there is no need for stress relief.

There are many other thermocouple installation methods and attachment techniques with which we are familiar including, drilled and peened into headers, deep drilled into steam turbines, enclosed in sheathing for furnace tube applications and chordal hole installations where the thermocouples are embedded into the walls of boiler tubes.

We can supply experienced staff for temperature monitoring contracts. We undertake project work including the supply and installation of thermocouples, attachment of thermocouples to customer requirements with associated cabling and panel work for recording, monitoring and data logging applications. All work undertaken is covered by our third party accreditation to ISO9001-2000.

Fibre Optic Cabling and Testing
Since the inception of Fibre Optic Cabling EMI Site Services have been actively involved in this field of work, and have acquired the expertise and ability to complete complex projects 'in-house'.

We have the facilities and the equipment to carry out both singlemode and multimode installations up to 1500nm wavelength, either by fusion splicing or direct termination of ST, SC or SMA connectors, (other connectors available on request).

We also have the capability to test Fibre Optic installations by loss measurement using Power Meter and Source as well as Optical Time Domain Reflectometer, (OTDR).
