09/06/2015 - EMI expands by launching EMI Design & Management Services

East Midlands Instrument Company (EMI) is pleased to announce the expansion of the business by launching a new division called EMI Design & Management Services headed up by a new, highly experienced engineering and project management team. This new division will enable EMI to expand its service offering beyond its traditional electrical and instrumentation installation services to include design, project management, commissioning and testing.

Founded in 1966 and now employing over 180 people, EMI is traditionally an electrical and instrumentation installation contractor for the power generation, power distribution, rail, process and major hazards industries across the UK.  Operating from three divisions, EMI currently provides electrical and instrumentation site installation services, electrical workshop services as well as design and project management services with the formation of the new team.

Keven Bingham, Managing Director of EMI, said “EMI will continue to operate as a site electrical installation contractor but this major investment will enable the company to offer the market and its existing clients more value added engineering design and project management services.  To accompany our investment, we are delighted to have attracted four highly experienced senior managers familiar with EMI’s operations to head up our new engineering team.”

These senior representatives will include John Willcock, Kevin Hewling, Kevin Tarrant and Roy Tonge who all bring a wealth of engineering and project management experience with them to EMI.  John previously headed up Siemens’ Power Distribution team in Manchester which was heavily focused on projects, alongside Kevin, Kevin and Roy.  The teams’ expertise and experience includes transmission and distribution, renewables as well as thermal generation.

John Willcock, Managing Director of EMI Design & Management Services, said “I’ve known EMI’s installation capabilities for a number of years’ and they have an excellent reputation in the market place for delivery.  This new investment will enable EMI to offer turnkey cradle to grave solutions as well as more value added engineering expertise to the market. Expanding EMI’s traditional installation business with this new offering will offer exciting growth opportunities for the business and its employees.”

Kevin Hewling, Projects Director for EMI Design & Management Services, said “I am delighted to be joining the EMI team, enabling the company to offer new services and expertise.  EMI has already been in discussion with a number of clients, all of which have demonstrated strong interest in our ambitions.  Offering customers turnkey solutions will enable clients to minimise the number of interfaces during a project, reducing management time and risk during project delivery.”

John also stated “EMI’s traditional clients in the thermal generation and distribution market will benefit from this increased service offering, providing integrated design, project management, installation and commissioning from one provider.  In the coming months, we will offer electrical engineers a progressive and entrepreneurial career path.  Our intention is to develop a business with cost effective solutions for its clients and provide sustained growth with exciting career opportunities for its employees.”

EMI’s investment in EMI Design & Management Services has been supported by Yorkshire Bank.  EMI has been advised by Jim Whittaker and Amy Lewis of Baker Tilly Corporate Finance and Lester Wilson and Louise Parker of DWF.  Tax advice was provided by Richard Hartley of Baker Tilly Tax and Accounting.  John Willcock and Kevin Hewling have been appointed to the main board of EMI alongside Managing Director Keven Bingham, Proposals Director Eddie Lovely, Operations Director Daniel Bingham and Works Director Michael Bingham.

EMI will continue to build its engineering expertise.
