24/05/2016 - EMI reaches momentous milestone at 50th anniversary

East Midlands Instrument Company (EMI) is delighted to have reached its 50th anniversary, bringing together founding members, directors and colleagues for a big celebration on the 14th May at Gainsborough’s Weston Rooms.

Founded on the 9th May 1966, by Michael Wilson, Robin Grey and Michael Gibson the company has evolved to the changing needs of the market and its clients’. EMI was originally focused on installing instrumentation schemes on power generators and water operating companies’ assets, but the company has evolved to include electrical site works which is now its core focus. Now employing over 180 people, EMI has continued to grow throughout its history – a true success story for Gainsborough and the Lincolnshire area.

The celebration included a warm welcome from EMI’s existing Managing Director, Keven Bingham, a live band called Just for Kicks, disco, buffet and collection of old memorabilia to help share stories. The party was initiated with founding member Michael Gibson along with the current Managing Directors Keven Bingham and John Willcock cutting the anniversary cake.

The past year has probably seen the biggest changes in the company’s history, with new management joining the board and additional services being offered through new competencies being employed in-house. June 2015 EMI launched a new division called EMI Design & Management Services headed up by a highly experienced engineering and project management team from Siemens’ Major Projects team in Manchester. EMI now has the competency to design, build and commission substations for major renewable projects and electricity network operators like National Grid and the Distribution Network Operators (DNO’s). This division have now set up a full project office in Congleton, Cheshire.

Keven Bingham, Managing Director of EMI, said “It was great to see over a hundred people attend EMI’s 50th birthday celebrations. Catching up with colleagues and friends was invaluable sharing stories and experiences of old projects. I’d like to thank all of the EMI team for their hard work over the years’ and the service they have provided the company.”

John Willcock, Managing Director of EMI Design & Management Services, said “I’ve known EMI for a number of years, using their services myself. Having now moved in to the company, EMI definitely has a community and family culture – both demonstrated through the length of service provided by long standing employees some of which are over 30 years’.  As a company with a deep heritage, it is important to preserve this for the future.”

EMI will continue to build its engineering and installation expertise.
